Zane climbed out of his station wagon, and I sat nervously fidgeting with my zipper in the passenger seat. I didn’t really want to move because I was scared. I was scared Bailey would show up, and I was also scared she wouldn’t.

I’d managed to get through so many Christmases without her, but this one was different. This one, there was no hope of more with us, and I hated it. I was tired and grumpy when Zane came around and opened the door, letting flakes of snow drift in and hit me. It was freezing cold out, but I followed him slowly into the house.

Sam was in the kitchen as we entered. Her eyes widened as she took us in. I hadn’t looked in a mirror in weeks, but I guessed from her reaction that I looked bad.

“Hey, Coop. How you doin’?” Her eyes roamed all over my face and narrowed on my collar.

I couldn’t even remember what I’d pulled on earlier, so I hadn’t a clue why she was glaring at my shirt.

“I’m okay.” I answered her in a monotone and she just shook her head at me. She turned to Zane and he nodded at her.

“Come on, Coop. I’ve set you up in the guest room.” Sam stepped around Zane, giving him a quick peck on the cheek. She led me downstairs into the basement. “Zane’s been working on this for weeks and it’s finally ready.”

We walked down into a living room, complete with sofa, TV, and mini fridge. There was a large bed in the corner, and a dresser with a lamp on top.

“Cooper,” Sam began, and I turned to face her. “He’s worried about you. Are you coping okay?”

I didn’t want to answer her because I wasn’t coping okay. I was so far from okay that I couldn’t even see any value in myself. But I’d been through worse when my mom died, so I knew I could get myself through this time.

“I’m not okay,” I informed them softly, and Sam stepped forward, hugging me.

“I know how hard this is for you. I know how much you love her, but she’s…”

Whatever she was, I didn’t get to hear, because there was a commotion upstairs and Sam and I both turned to the stairs as we heard raised voices. She took off, and I dropped my bags onto the bed and sprinted after her.

I made it to the kitchen a few seconds after her. My mouth popped open at the sight of my dad and Zane standing face to face. Henri stood behind my dad.

“I didn’t come here to see you,” he hissed at Zane, and Zane flinched.

“Dad, why are you here?” I asked, hoping to break the tension, and my dad spun around, almost knocking Henri over.

“You! You ungrateful little shit! How could you? How could you stop the wedding like that?” He spat the words at me and I took a step back.

I had just opened my mouth to reply when Sam stepped between us.
